Wood of Cree, Dumfries

Acquisition of 394 acres of the Wood of Cree, the largest ancient wood in southern Scotland. This acquisition brought the RSPB's holdings here to 524 acres. In Spring, violets and primroses give way to carpets of bluebells and the deep gorges cut by the tumbling burns are home to a range of scarce mosses and liverworts. The wood supports a wealth of summer migrants and is noted for its numbers of pied flycatchers, wood warblers, redstarts and tree pipits, as well as resident species such as barn owls, tawny owls, great spotted woodpeckers and buzzards.
