Wedgwood copy of the Portland Vase
Acquisition of the Erasmus Darwin Portland Vase copy. English, Josiah Wedgwood, Etruria, Staffordshire, probably 1789. Jasperware, solid blue-black with white relief's. Wedgewood sent the vase to his friend Dr Erasmus Darwin of Derby in 1789 and it remained with the family until it was lent to the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1963. 25.2x19.1cm Trunk-shaped travelling case, wood, covered in red leather with stamped and gilt borders, and brass handles; fitted interior lined with red velvet edged with silver braid 20.4x1.30x22.5cm.
