Wall paintings, St Lawrence, (Whitchurch), Little Stanmore

Restoration of 18th century wall and ceiling paintings in the church rebuilt by Handel's patron, the Duke of Chandos, in 1715. Leaving only the Tudor tower of the old church, he commissioned John James to create a new building, James Gibbs to design a Chandos Mausoleum, Gerald Smith to build the organ on which Handel was so often to play, Grinling Gibbons to decorate with carvings the organ and other parts of the interior of the new church, and Italian and French artists to embellish the walls and ceilings with religious paintings. The result is a Baroque masterpiece.
