Views of the Lake District by de Loutherbourg
Acquisition of two oil paintings: ‘Belle Isle, Windermere, in a Calm’ (1785) and ‘Belle Isle, Windermere, in a Storm’ (1786), by Philip Jacques De Loutherbourg. The two works were commissioned by John Christian Curwen to hand in his home in the Lake District, Workington Hall. However, in 1774 the works were hung at Belle Isle, an island in the middle of Lake Windermere which the family purchase and landscaped as their summer house.
