Victoria Cross Medal Group of Sergeant Major N V Carter

Acquisition of the medal group, including Victoria Cross, and memorial plaque to Company Sargent Major Nelson Victor Carter for display at the Royal Sussex Regimental Museum. The VC was awarded posthumously for outstanding courage during action on 30 June 1916 leading up to the 1st Battle of the Somme. The Royal Sussex Regiment had VCs awarded to six men, of whom only Carter was born in Sussex.
