Two Seamstresses In the Workroom by Vuillard
Acquisition of painting by Eduard Vuillard (1886-1940), Two Seamstresses in the Workroom. Oil on millboard, 13.3 x 19.4. Vuillard is one of the most famous French artists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The painting comes from his intimiste period, of the early 1890s, when he and his close friend Bonnard made a radical departure from realist principles and helped create the foundations of modern art. Two Seamstresses shows two young women who worked in Vuillard’s mother’s corset-making business. It was the first painting by Vuillard to enter a UK collection: he gave it to the Scottish artist, Charles Mackie, when he visited the studio in 1893.
