Sutton Scarsdale Chairs

Acquisition of a suite of chairs probably commissioned for Sutton Scarsdale House in Derbyshire in about 1724. Comprising 12 chairs, two sofas and a pair of pedestals and made of walnut or walnut veneer. Their back-painted armorial panels and gilt metal mounts are unique in the period. The maker has been identified as Thomas How, cabinet maker of Westminster, one of the leading furniture makers and upholsterers of his day.
