Stanley Presentation Snuff Box

Acquisition of a gold snuff box presented by Queen Victoria to Henry Stanley, who succeeded in finding Dr Livingstone on the Shores of Lake Tanganyika in 1871 after a two year search. The box is inscribed 'Presented by Her Majesty Queen Victoria to Henry M Stanley Esq, In Recognition of the prudence and zeal displayed by him in opening communication with Dr Livingstone and thus relieving the general anxiety felt in regard to the fate of that distinguished traveller'. Henry Morgan (1841-1904) acquired his name through adoption by a benevolent merchant in New Orleans. He was born John Rowlands in Denbigh, North Wales and was for some while as a child in the workhouse in St Asaph.
