Sketch for the Banqueting Hall Ceiling by Rubens

Acquisition of sketch, oil on panel dated to 1632-3. One of a small group of preparatory sketches by Rubens for the ceiling of the Banqueting Hall in Whitehall. The scene represents an allegorical glorification of James 1. He is shown throned and in the act of reuniting the crowns of England and Scotland, as represented by his succession to the English throne in 1603. The figures are dramatically depicted as seen from the floor of The Banqueting Hall. Had been on loan to Birmingham City Art Gallery since 1949.
