Sir William Herrick Exchequer Papers
Acquisition at auction of the exchequer papers relating to Sir William Herrick (1562-1653), one of the four Tellers of the Exchequer or Receipt, 1616-23; with one book of certificates, 1608-16, of his predecessor Sir William Bowyer. Herrick moved in government circles and in 1580-1581 undertook a mission to the Grand Turk on behalf of Elizabeth I. He was appointed Royal Jeweller by James I in 1603, knighted in 1605 and appointed Teller of the Exchequer in 1616. He represented the Borough of Leicester in the House of Commons three times in 1601, 1605 and 1620.The papers comprise official records kept by Herrick in his period of office at the Exchequer of receipt, the division of the Exchequer concerned with the receipt and payment of the King's moneys. They comprise over 2,300 documents and a series of ledgers, 28 volumes in all. See also grant to Leicestershire County Council to acquire Sir William's autograph account book from the same sale.
