Scottish Silver Campaign Canteen
Acquisition of silver travelling canteen made by Ebenezer Oliphant, Edinburgh, 1740-1. Said to have been made for Prince Charles Edward Stewart. Set contains 31 pieces. Outer case is decorated with bands of linked thistles, flowers and leaves, representing the collar of the Order of the Thistle. Oliphant was a member of the staunchly Jacobite family of Oliphant of Gask and the canteen may been a 21st birthday present. It was said to have been lost along with much of the Prince's other baggage at the Battle of Culloden and fell in the hands of the Hanoverian commander William, Duke of Cumberland, who presented it to his aide-de-camp George Keppel, Lord Bury, later Earl of Albemarle.
