Quarry Bank Mill, Styal, water wheel

Restoration and installation of an 1851 waterwheel designed by Sir William Fairbairn. The Fairbairn wheel replaced the Mill's original wheel, which had been scrapped in 1904. It is almost the same dimensions as the original wheel; 7.3m in diameter and 6.7m wide. The restoration involved dismantling the wheel is a disused mill in Yorkshire, re-erecting it (including the fabrication of new parts such as the central shaft), and re-instating the water supply. Today it is the most powerful working waterwheel in Britain capable of generating over 100hp.
