Portrait of Sir Joseph Banks by Reynolds

Acquisition through private treaty sale of Portrait of Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820) by Sir Joshua Reynolds. Banks accompanied Captain Cook on the First Voyage to Australia and New Zealand from 1768 to 1771. He was President of the Royal Society from 1778 until his death, chief adviser to George III on science and instrumental in the establishment of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew.
