Portrait of the Shudi family by Tuscher

Acquisition at auction of portrait of Burkat Shudi and his Family by Marcus Tuscher, circa 1742. Burkat Shudi (1702-73) one of the most distinguished harpsichord makers of his day, came to London from Switzerland at the age of 16. Within 10 years he was running a prosperous business in Soho and included Handel among his customers. The painting shows Shudi tuning a harpsichord, his wife Catherine and sons Joshua and Burkat are sitting nearby. oil on canvas, 834 x 1415mm .
