Portrait of Lady Clarges by Gainsborough

Acquisition of portrait, oil on canvas, of Louisa, Lady Clarges, born Louisa Skrine, daughter of William Skrine of Claverton Manor nr Bath. Portrait probably dates from the time of her marriage to Sir Thomas Clarges in 1777. As well as becoming an accomplished signer and harpist herself, she was an important musical patron. 127 x 101.6 cm, Had been on loan to the Mueum for 20 years when put up for sale.
