Portrait of Francis Schutz in his Bed by Hogarth

Painting by William Hogarth (1697-1764) of Francis Matthew Schultz in his bed c. 1755-60 (oil on canvas; 64.2 x 76.2cm). It represents Schutz after a night's dissipation sitting on the side of his bed, clutching his aching head and vomiting into a chamber pot. It was later overpainted to make it appear he was reading in bed. It was believed to have been commissioned by his wife as a lesson in temperance. Schutz married a Norfolk heiress in 1755 and came to live at Gillingham Hall, Norfolk, which became the family seat and where the painting remained until 1989.
