Portrait and Diary of General Sir Arthur Brooke

Acquisition of the portrait and diary of General Sir Arthur Brooke (1772-1843) who was a member of a leading Ulster family. As commanding officer of the 44th Regiment the then Colonel Brooke was second-in-command of the British expedition sent in 1814 to attack the coast of the United States and so divert the Americans from invading Canada. The mission successfully captured Washington and burned the Capitol and all other public buildings. These events were recorded by the Ulsterman in his diary.
