Oxburgh Hall Chapel Altarpiece

Acquisition, and endowment for maintenance, of a carved and painted Flemish altarpiece retable made in Antwerp in about 1520-30, in the Chapel of Oxburgh Hall, Norfolk. The NT own Oxburgh Hall but not the Chapel, which was probably designed by Pugin. The NT were anxious that the altarpiece should remain in situ when the owner wished to sell. The altarpiece comprises six components within a round headed case and enclosed by a pair of painted panel doors. The interior central sections contain a carved and glided passion cycle, which is continued on the inside panels of the painted wings, which act as the doors. The painted wings, when closed, show the Four Fathers of the church standing before a wall.
