Norman House, Norwich

Preservation of the remains of a 12th-century stone house Norman House, St Martins-at-Palace Plain,Norwich. Uncovered by archaeological excavation in 1981 and still standing in excess of 2 metres in height. Contain two doorways (one with an intact original door pin), remains of three windows and a latrine turret with an intact arch at the base for cleansing. Constructed of coursed flint rubble with dressings of Barnack limestone. Traces of an inserted brick vault of 15th-century date were recorded by the excavation, supported by three piers. The building has been preserved within a purpose-built room beneath the Magistrates’ Courts which were constructed in 1982-4. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
