Messel-Rosse Collection of Fans

Acquisition of the Messel-Rosse Fan collection, which was created by Colonel Leonard Messel, and was inherited by his daughter, the late Anne, Countess of Rosse, from whom it was acquired. The collection comprises 727 items: European fans, fan cases, unmounted fan leaves, and Oriental fans for the European market (464): Japanese, Chinese and Korean fans (78), unmounted Oriental painted fan leaves (115); Japanese and European unmounted printed fan leaves (40), Chinese textile cases for fans (30). they date from the 17th century to the 20th century.
