Memorial to George Home, 1st Earl Dunbar

Repair and restoration of the memorial in the Parish Church of Dunbar commemorating George Home, Earl of Dunbar, who died in 1611. A son of Alexander Home of Manderston, he was knighted in 1590 and acquired the lands of Spott in 1592. In 1601 he was appointed Treasuere for Scotland. Afetr 1603 he resided mainly in London and continued in high favour with King James, who made him Earl of Dunbar in 1605 and appointed him one of the commissioners of the Borders in 1606. the great funerary monument measures 26 feet by 12 feet. It was by far the richest piece of Renaissance sculpture then seen in Scotland. It is believed to have been the product of a select group of Netherlandish sculptors who practised between the mid 1580s and the 1620s, specialising in tombs and chimney pieces. In 1987 Dunbar Parish Church and the monument were severely damaged by fire but expert inspection showed that the monument could be satisfactorily restored.
