Medieval effigy of Sir Roger de Burghfield

Acquisition and restitution of 14th century wooden effigy of Sir Roger de Burghfield which was stolen from the Parish Church of St Mary The Virgin in Burghfield in 1978. It was rediscovered at the Ghent Antiques Fair and seized by Interpol, but the parishioners were faced with the need to compensate the Belgian dealer who had bought the effigy for £4,000, plus legal costs, transport and other expenses. It was returned to the church, with the help of the NHMF grant, in May 1982.
