Margaret Layton's Jacket and Portrait
Portrait of Margaret Layton (1579?-1641) the daughter of Sir Hugh Brown, a rich London vintner. She married Francis Layton of West Leyton and Rwdon, West Yorkshire (1577-1661) who was Yeoman of the Jewel House. The portrait is in oil by an unknown artist of the English School. The embroidered jacket which she is wearing in the portrait has survived and was acquired with the painting. It is the only piece of everyday dress from before 1700 for which there is a contemporary portrait showing it being worn.
