The project will acquire, secure and preserve a collection of 40 historic steam and other boats in the Windermere Steamboat Museum. A team will dismantle, document and archive the interiors, remove the boilers and engines, lift the boats out of the water, erect a temporary building and prepare both the boats and buildings for a major restoration and conservation project.
This collection, at the Windermere Steamboat Museum, is the most significant of its kind anywhere in the world and includes the world’s oldest mechanically propelled boat (Dolly, 1850), as well as several of the oldest, rarest and most elegant boats in Britain.
