James Grant sword and scabbard

Acquisition of rare broadsword made by James Grant of Stirling c 1759. Grant was journeyman to James Allan Sword maker of Stirling but was in business himself from 1759. Only 5 Grant Swords are known to exist all now in public collections. It is likely that Grant made or was involved in many of the swords attributed to James Allan while he was a journeyman. The sword has a Jacobite connection due to the inscription on the top of the scabbard “ Prosperity to Scotland and God Bless King James 3” a reference to the Jacobite line of accession. This inscription was probably added by the owner.
