Hanson Library of Maritime Books and Atlases

Acquisition of a comprehensive library of British and foreign books on the history of shipbuilding and navigation formed by a founder member of the Cruising Association, Herbert James Hanson. It includes many remarkable maritime atlases, the earliest from the 16th centre; books devoted to ship-building and design, some describing specific problems like the preservation of dry rot in ships; wonks on the fundamental questions of the accurate measurement of time and determination of longitude; accounts of shipwrecks; rare works on scurvy and other diseases specific to naval life.
