Hamilcar Glider, Recovery and Restoration
Recovery and restoration of General Aircraft Ltd (GAL) Hamilcar - the largest of the UK wartime gliders, it was designed to carry a seven ton Tetrarch Tank, but emerged capable of carrying 60 troops or bulky military loads of up to 8 tons. Constructed mostly of wood, it was also the heaviest glider produced in Britain and played an important role during the D-Day landings in Normandy in 1944. Approximately 320 Hamilcars were built. The aircraft fuselage and cockpit were re-constructed after being found in use as farm buildings.
