Greek Marble Altar from the Arundel Collection

Acquisition of late 5th century BC Pintilic marble altar covered with Hermes, Demeter and Persephone. Formerly in the celebrated collection formed by Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel (1586-1646) in the early 17th century. The Arundel collection is the oldest and most influential collection of Graeco- Roman sculptures assembled in the UK. In 1677 part of the Arundel Collection was given to the University of Oxford and it is one of the founding collections of the Ashmolean Museu, University of Oxford.
