Grange Farm Barn, Coggeshall, Acquisition

Acquisition by compulsory purchase of twelfth-century timber framed and weather-boarded tithe barn which was formerly part of Coggeshall Abbey. Very few buildings of this kind exist in Britain of this or comparable age. The barn had deteriorated to a very serious extent and effective action had ben necessary to save it from total destruction. NHMF's grant was towards the purchase price and the sum paid to the owner by way of compensation. Thus the original grant of £20,000 was increased to £30,000 on 22/7/82
