George Cross medal group of Lt Robert Davies RE

Court-mounted group of three medals awarded to Lieutenant Robert Davies RE GC. The group comprises the George Cross; Defence Medal 1939-45; War Medal 1939-45. This George Cross, which subsequently became known as the 'St Paul's George Cross' was awarded to Davies on 30 September 1940 for his part in defusing an unexploded bomb that threatened St Paul's Cathedral. This was one of the first three GCs to be awarded.
