Evening in the City of London 1944 by David Bomberg

Acquisition of painting entitled Evening in the City of London 1944 by David Bomberg (1890-1957). Gaunt outlines of City buildings after the Blitz: presumably painted from the tower or St Mary-le-Bow, the view stretches from the river (left) to the dome of St Paul's and the area north of it. The strong diagonal on the right is Cheapside. Bomberg taught at Borough Polytechnic from 1945-1953, during which time his inspirational and unorthodox teaching methods much influenced the work of Auerbach and Kossof. Bomberg said 'I want to translate the life of a great city... into art that shall not be photographic, but expressive.'
