Earl (1st) of Sandwich Papers

Acquisition of papers of Edward Montagu, 1st Earl of Sandwich (1625-72) a distinguished naval commander, politician and diplomat. In 1660, as General of the Fleet, he supported the restoration of Charles II and was rewarded with an earldom and a series of high offices. He was killed in the 3rd Anglo-Dutch War in a naval action off Southwold Bay. His papers include correspondence with Charles II, James II, Oliver Cromwell and Samuel Pepys.
