The grant will be used to top up funds already commmitted by Trusts and private individuals towards the purchase of Dumfries House its contents and estate. The house, currently in private hands, will be opened to the public and the estate rejuvenated to the benefit of the neighbouring town of Cumnock. Empty buildings on the estate will be repaired and refurbished along with others as holiday lets, providing an endowment for the house and collection.
They have agreed to fund the acquisition of the house, its contents and adjoining land for the public benefit.
Its location on the edge of Cumnock in East Ayrshire means that the House and Estate will act as an engine for social and economic regeneration.
