Death of a Stag by Benjamin West

Acquisition of a painting by Benjamin West (1738-1820), the first American painter to achieve an international reputation. It's full title is 'Alexander the Third, King of Scotland, Rescued from the Fury of a Stag by the Intrepidity of Colin Fitzgerald.' It represents a legend from the history of the Clan Mackenzie. The work was commissioned in 1783 by Francis Humberston Mackenzie, the Clan's chieftain, created Viscount Seaforth and Baron Mackensie of Kintail in 1797.
