D H Lawrence Manuscript of Memoirs of Maurice Magnus

Acquisition of the manuscript of an essay written by D H Lawrence in 1922 as an introduction to Magnus' 'Memoir of the Foreign Legion' and he described it as the single best piece of writing that he had ever done. At the time of publication it aroused some controversy due to Lawrence's handling of the biographical ,material and in particular the issue of homosexuality. Nottingham University was offered the opportunity to acquire the manuscript which had found its way to America.
