Chevening Estate Storm Damage
Landscape restoration and replanting following damage in the great storm of October 1987. Chevening was presented to the nation by the 7th Earl of Stanhope in 1959. Following his death it became the responsibility of the Prime Minister to nominate the occupant and the house is currently the official residence of the Foreign Secretary. 75 percent of the trees on the Chevening Estate were either destroyed or badly damaged in the storm. NHMF gave a grant of £97,000 towards restoration of the park and woodland, as those areas are accessible to the general public.
