Carved Narwhal Horn, 12th Century

Acquisition following Export Stop of medieval carved ivory 12th century Narwhal Horn. Originally thought to be the horn of a unicorn and regarded as symbols of Christ. Actually from a small arctic whale, possibly carved in the workshops at Lincoln Cathedral and used as a processional candlestick. Thought to be one of only two - the other one at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
