Bust of Shakespeare by Rysbrack

Acquisition of bust of Shakespeare by John Michael Rysbrack (1694-1770). It was commissioned by James West MP (1704?-1772), Joint Secretary to the Treasury, President of the Royal Society and a celebrated antiquarian and collector. In the 1750s West was refurbishing his house at Alscot Park, Stratford-on-Avon the commission dates from that period. The bust remained at Alscot Park until sent for auction in 1986.
