Bust of Cardinal dal Pozzo by Bernini

Acquisition of bust of Cardinal dal Pozzo (1547-1607), Archbishop of Pisa. A youthful work of about 1623 by the greatest sculptor of the Italian baroque, Gianlorenzo Bernini (1598-1680). The marble was almost certainly commissioned by the sitter's nephew Cassiano dal Pozzo, the celebrated collector and antiquarian, as a posthumous tribute to his uncle and mentor, who had died in 1607. The bust was acquired by Henry Howard, 4th Earl of Carlisle, when he visited Rome in the early 18th century. It was sold from Castle Howard in 1986.
