Acquisition of three instruments: voice flute in D. Joseph Bradbury, England, After 1689, probably early 18th century. At the time this instrument was made, `Flute' was used primarily to mean the recorder (the transverse flute was the 'German flute'); a 'voice flute' was a tenor recorder pitched in D, a size of instrument suitable for playing vocal parts at written pitch. Two natural horns in D. Nicholas Winkings, London, c 1740. This form of horn, with three coils, still used as a hunting instrument, was more convenient for use in concerted music than the two coil trompe, but not yet designed for playing with the hand in the bell.
