Barsham Anglo-Saxon hoard

Acquisition of Anglo-Saxon hoard from Barsham in Suffolk. Consists of 60 coins and a silver disc brooch. The coins are all silver pennies in the name of Aethelred II (978-1016) of the long cross type which were current from around 997 to 1003. The brooch was discovered wrapped around the coins and is decorated on the front with repousse bosses and geometric and scroll designs. As one of only five hoards of this date and because items of late Saxon jewellery are virtually non-existent for this region, the hoard is of outstanding importance.
