An Allegory of the Old and New Testments by Holbein
Acquisition of painting by Holbein. Known primarily for his striking portraits, Holbein also painted religious works, of which this is an important example. The panel is a complex composition of the central theme of the Reformation, the contrast between the Old Testament Law and the New Testament Grace. Figures dotted about the extensive landscape impersonate the abstract concepts relating to the them.
