Acquittal of the Seven Bishops by J R Herbert

Acquisition of painting by J R Herbert (1810-1890) depicting the seven bishops who were imprisoned by James II after they had petitioned him in 1688 against the Second Declaration of Indulgence. The Bishops' stand was the first gesture of defiance towards the King, who was deposed later that year. There are over 150 figures depicted on this large canvas. The painting is now displayed in the Peers' Guest Room of the House of Lords.
