Achavrail Armlet

Acquisition of the Achavrail Armlet, made of patinated bronze and weighing nearly 1lb 11oz. The armlet was made by the 'cive-perdue' method and is one of only 17 examples of a metalwork school apparently concentrated in the North East of Scotland in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. It was found in Achavrail in 1901 by a crofter who was ploughing and placed on loan to the museum at Dunrobin Castle. At its sale in 1986, Inverness Museum was an unsuccessful bidder at auction, but when the item was placed on temporary export stop, it was able to acquire it with grant assistance.
