Abernethy Forest Lodge Estate

Acquisition of 8903 ha. of ancient Caldeonian Pine Forest known as Abernethy Forest Lodge Estate. The southern edge of the forest was also once an extensive area of pinewood but owing to overgrazing by excessive numbers of red deer, the pines are not able to regenerate and gradually the trees are disappearing. The forest is home for many birds including the Golden Eagle, Scottish Crissbill, peregrine and golden plover; and is of national and international importance. The property currently carries the following designations: Site of Specific Scientific Interest, Abernethy Forest National Nature Reserve, Special Protection Area, Candidate Special Area of Conservation, Environmentally Sensitive Area, Cairngorms National Scenic Area and within The Cairngorms National Park.
