Vital grant to save rare Anglo-Saxon gold for nation
Today, the National Heritage Memorial Fund awarded Leeds Museums and Galleries a crucial £95,000 grant to help secure a spectacular Anglo-Saxon hoard of gold for the nation.

The West Yorkshire Ring Hoard
The ‘West Yorkshire Hoard’ comprises six extremely rare pieces of gold jewellery dating from the seventh to 11th centuries. It provides an outstanding opportunity to significantly increase our understanding of the Anglo-Saxon era, particularly trade and craft. The most spectacular item is a stunning gold ring with a lozenge-shaped bezel set with a garnet gem which is in near-perfect condition.
The hoard was discovered by a metal detectorist in the Leeds Metropolitan area in 2009 and represents one of the most significant finds of Anglo-Saxon jewellery ever discovered in the area. The hoard is currently on display in Leeds City Museum, which now needs to raise just £15,000 to secure them permanently.
