St Helen’s Church, Abingdon: Medieval Painted Ceiling

Conservation of a painted ceiling, installed in the early 1390s in the Lady Chapel of St Helen's Church, Abingdon, one of the most impressive medieval works of art to survive in any parish church. It has 52 panels which were originally filled by a depiction of the Tree of Jesse. There had been several restoration campaigns in the 19th century which had led to some damaged panels being destroyed and others moved and reaffixed to a new roof. This conservation project would restore their original position and replace missing panels with blanks.
