Islands of Canna and Sanday.

Acquisition and endowment of contiguous Islands, SSSIs and part of National Scenic Area of the Small Isles of the Inner Hebrides. In 1981, the islands, together with their farm, crofts and all buildings (except the Presbyterian Church, St Edward’s Church now deconsecrated and owned by the The National Trust for Scotland, and the Schoolhouse on Sanday), were presented to the Trust by Dr John Lorne Campbell. Included in this gift were Dr Campbell’s library, archives of papers and sound recordings, and collections of moths and butterflies. At the time of gift, the Trust purchased Canna House from Dr Campbell and also established an endowment, both funded by a generous grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF). This grant was conditional upon the libraries and collections, owned by the Trust and situated in Canna House, not being removed from the island without written approval by the NHMF Trustees. Also, the Trust was required to ensure appropriate public access to the property. Dr Campbell died in 1996 and his widow, Dr Margaret Fay Shaw Campbell, died on 11 December 2004. Dr Campbell expressed the wish that the ownership of the islands by the Trust should ensure the maintenance in Canna of a traditional Hebridean community and the preservation and extension of the island’s amenities. The purchase of the Campbells’ home, “Burnside”, was an extremely complementary aspect in that regard.
