Blue Baby Blitz over Britain by Burra

Acquisition of a watercolour by Edward Burra (1905-1976). Burra lived in Rye. One of the chain of radar stations along the south coast which the Luftwaffe attempted to destroy during the winter of 1940-41. His painting dates from this time, featuring a monstrous blue bird like figure hovering over a desolate landscape, with clouds of smoke rise from rocky shapes on the ground whilst a group of figures cower in terror among the ruins of their homes. Painting, watercolour and gouache on paper, 67.5 x 100.5 cm.
